Benchmark for this planOne piece is missing
First compare the application with the official list and ask the prefecture to name the exact room.
Keep the message indicating the missing part, prepare only this document and send it through the indicated channel with proof.
Benchmark for this planNo response
Check the ANEF, email and unwanteds, then formalize a restart with the folder reference.
Send a factual boost, ask for confirmation of completeness and keep the evidence. A revival alone does not suspend a remedy.
Benchmark for this planRefusal or closure of the file
Read the full decision: a refusal requires a separate check of reasons, channels and deadlines and may require a specialized opinion.
Keep the date of notification, check the routes and deadlines indicated and request a qualified opinion. An appeal model does not guarantee the outcome.
Benchmark for this planThe demand is not clear
Do not guess the expected format: ask for the written basis, the list of parts and the transmission channel.
Describe the file and document, request the exact requirement in writing, and keep the answer with the original document.

Step 1
Renewing a residence permit without breach of rights
Renewal must be undertaken in the window provided for your title category, usually on the ANEF or according to the prefecture's instructions. The simple filing does not always automatically extend all the rights: one must distinguish confirmation of deposit, certificate of extension of instruction and receipt.

Step 2
Create and secure your ANEF account
The ANEF is the official portal for many forms of residence and nationality, but not all categories of application follow the same path. The required identifiers vary depending on whether you have a visa, a residence permit, a foreign number or an account already created during a previous process.

Step 3
Receipt and attestation: provisional documents pending title
The application receipt for a residence permit is a provisional document which proves that your application for a residence permit is being investigated. The attestation of decision confirms the opinion. While waiting for the card (months), the receipt guarantees a legal status and often the right to work. Here's what each document means, your rights and how to get it.

Step 4
Traveling during the title renewal and returning to France
The answer depends on the exact provisional document, not just the fact that a dossier exists in ANEF, as well as a possible exit from the Schengen area. A renewal receipt or an extension certificate issued at the time of renewal usually allows the return with the old expired title and a valid passport. A certificate of filing or a document of first application does not have the same effect.

Step 5
ANEF without reply: preserve its rights, request a document and claim
In case of ANEF delay, first identify the document available to you: confirmation or certificate of deposit, receipt, certificate of extension of instruction or decision. Their effects are different. Collect the evidence of a full and timely deposit, use the official ANEF and prefecture channels, then quickly request France Services, the Defender of Rights, an association or a lawyer if the stay, work or other rights are likely to be interrupted.

Step 6
Appeal against a decision of the Prefecture (title, refusal of residence)
If the prefecture refuses to issue/renew a residence permit or takes an obligation to leave French territory (OQTF), you have a right of appeal. The time frames and types differ: ex gratia, hierarchical, administrative court litigation. Here's when to appeal, how and what to expect.
