Who this guide is for
Section actions
- You if you need to have a birth/marriage certificate translated for the town hall, prefecture or naturalization
- You if you graduate from a Russian institution with ENIC-NARIC or for recognition in France
- You if a court proceeding requires the translation of documents into French
To be prepared in advance
Section actions
- Original document (for Russian acts — with apostille if applicable)
- Copy of the document to be translated (the original is often left with you)
- Subject matter of the translation: town hall (marriage, PACS), prefecture (residence permit), ENIC-NARIC, court
Step-by-step procedure
Section actions
- 1Find a sworn translator via the official list of the Court of Cassation (directory of judicial experts) or the directory service-public.fr. Specify the language (Russian → French).
- 2Important: the expert must be sworn in for your language couple (Russian-French). An expert from another language is not suitable.
- 3Forward the document: by email (scan), by mail (copy), or in person. Indicate: type of document, length, object, urgency. The translator sends a quote.
- 4Compare the proposals: rate 的20–40 €/page, delay 2–10 days. For the emergency (24–48h) — surcharge 30–50%. Do not target the cheapest — may not be sworn in.
- 5The translator returns the signed translation, stamped, marked "Translator sworn to the Court of Appeal of [city]". Each translation page is linked to a copy of the original.
- 6Apostille: for Russian documents issued by the authorities, an apostille (Russian Ministry of Justice) is required prior to translation. Soviet acts — sometimes without apostille, but to be checked in town hall.
- 7For naturalisation: the translated civil status documents must be less than 6 months old at the filing. Order the translation as close as possible to the repository.
- 8Keep several certified copies of the original with translation — for different administrations. The order for a new act is made via the Russian Consulate in France, then apostilles and sworn translation.
Common mistakes
Section actions
- Using an ordinary (unassigned) translator — the administration will refuse.
- Do not check accreditation by a Court of Appeal — risk of fraud.
- Ordering translation without apostille — for official Russian acts, the apostille is necessary.
- Do not take into account the period of 6 months for civil status documents — the translation will be expired.
- Do not make certified copies — each jurisdiction requests a separate copy.
