Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • Holders of a foreign diploma to which an employer or an authority requests an official benchmark
  • Students to study when the institution recommends certification
  • Professionals engaged in an unregulated activity

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Diploma and transcript or diploma supplement
  • Identification document
  • Translations when the personalized list of the service requires them
  • Justification for a possible exemption where provided for

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Ask the employer, institution or administration first if certification is really necessary. An organization can assess the diploma itself and is not obliged to request this document.
  2. 2Check the profession. For a regulated activity — in particular certain professions of health, law, architecture or education — contact the competent authority; ENIC-NARIC does not give the right to practise.
  3. 3Create the file in France Éducation international's official teleservice and follow the list of parts generated. Requirements vary by country, degree and motive.
  4. 4Download complete and legible copies as well as required translations. Do not send originals without explicit request for service.
  5. 5Check the rate and exemptions at the time of payment: amounts and conditions may change.
  6. 6After issue, send the certificate to the organization concerned. It gives a benchmark but does not oblige any employer, institution or administration to automatically recognize the diploma.
  7. 7For naturalization, do not use the certificate as proof of French. Since 2026, naturalization by decree requires separately an oral and written B2 level justified according to the official list.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Present the attestation as a complete equivalence with a French diploma
  • Pay without asking the recipient if the document is useful
  • Use ENIC-NARIC instead of the procedure of a regulated profession
  • Resuming an old fixed rate without checking it
  • Believing that the certificate proves the level of French for naturalization

Important remark

The comparability certificate is a non-binding opinion and does not create automatic legal equivalence. For a regulated profession or competition, check the requirements of the receiving authority.
