Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Start with the attending physician or general practitioner: he evaluates, can prescribe drugs and direct to psychologist/psychiatrist. From 2022 — MonPsy device: until 8 sessions with a psychologist reimbursed by CPAM on prescription.
  2. 2For serious/chronic disorders — CMP (Medical-Psychological Centre): free public centre, with a team of psychiatrists and psychologists. Guidance is not mandatory, you can register directly. List of CMPs on the psychiatric sector site of your department.
  3. 3For children/adolescents — CMP for children/adolescents or school doctor, PMI for the youngest. Free.
  4. 4Private Psychiatrist: via medical guidance, with reimbursement CPAM (sector 1 ~45 €, 70 %; sector 2 with exceedances).
  5. 5In crisis (suicidal ideas, acute anxiety): Call 3114 (free national line 24/7), Suicide Listen 01 45 39 40 00, or 15 (SAMU). Also psychiatric emergencies in hospital.
  6. 6Listening lines: S.O.S. Friendship 09 72 39 40 50, Red Cross Listen, Fil Health Young 09 80 98 09 25 (young).
  7. 7Hospitalisation: in acute need — free hospitalization or, as a last resort, upon request by a third party (HDT) on medical advice. Free in the public sector.
  8. 8Confidentiality: any exchange is protected by secrecy. Physician/psychologist does not share with employer/neighbour without your consent (unless imminent danger).

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Roaring to consult — mental health counts as much as physical health.
  • Believing paid help only. CMP, MonPsy — free/reimbursed.
  • Waiting for the crisis — early help is preferable.
  • Do not call in crisis — 24/7 lines exist for free.
  • Hide symptoms from doctor — reduced effectiveness.

Important remark

Mental health requires an individual approach. This information is indicative and does not replace a consultation. In crisis, call 3114.
