Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • Pregnant and future parents residing in France
  • New arrivals without care path or stable Caf backrest
  • Employees, self-employed, job seekers and families with foreign acts

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Certificate of rights or Vital card, mutual and contact doctor or midwife
  • Declaration of pregnancy and contact details of maternity
  • Passports, family booklets or birth certificates of parents
  • Documents of early recognition or of choice of name if concerned
  • References Caf, RIB, employment contract and collective agreement

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Organize follow-up with a midwife, doctor or gynaecologist and choose maternity. In case of worrying symptoms, follow the medical regulation rather than the administrative schedule.
  2. 2Check that the pregnancy report has been sent to Sickness Insurance and Caf before the official deadline, usually the end of the 14th week. Control reception in personal spaces.
  3. 3Check reimbursement, maternity or paternity leave and allowances according to status and dates. No universal percentage of wages should be promised: conditions, ceiling and employer supplement vary.
  4. 4Before giving birth, prepare the civil status: spelling of names, possible recognition, foreign parent's documents and maternity instructions. Identify who will actually submit the return.
  5. 5A birth in France is declared in principle at the town hall of the place of birth in the 5 days, not counting the day of delivery, with adaptations for weekends and holidays. Check that the maternity service has done well.
  6. 6After the act, attach the child to Sickness Insurance — possibly to both parents — and inform Caf, the mutual, the employer and taxes within the applicable time limits. Keep the acts.
  7. 7Use the departmental PMI for free preventive support of pregnancy, parents and young children, especially without a pediatrician. The IMP does not replace emergencies or specialists.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Suppose that doctor, maternity, CPAM and Caf have automatically exchanged all data
  • Count on a fixed bonus or 100 % of salary without checking conditions
  • Let expire the 5 days thinking that the hospital necessarily declared the birth
  • Use different names in folders
  • Delaying care due to lack of Vitale Card

Important remark

Medical monitoring, reimbursement, leave and benefits depend on health, open rights, professional status, family and resources. Medical decisions are individual.
