Who this guide is for
Section actions
- You if you are pregnant and planning an abortion
- You if you want to understand the time and methods available
- You if you are a minor or need anonymous help
To be prepared in advance
Section actions
- The exact term pregnancy (since the 1st day of the last period)
- The list of IVG centres / doctors via IVG.gouv.fr or 0 800 08 11 11
- The Vital Card (for reimbursement; ATU for anonymity)
Step-by-step procedure
Section actions
- 1Call IVG.gouv.fr or the 0 800 08 11 11 — free anonymous consultation, directs you to a centre/professional. Time counts (up to 14 weeks).
- 2Determine the method according to the term: IVG drug (pill mifepristone + misoprostol) up to 7 weeks — in doctor/midwife/centre; up to 9 weeks in extension. Surgical IVG — from 7 to 14 weeks in hospital/centre.
- 3Physician/centre consultation: confirmation of the term (ethography), method information, laboratory analyses. Since 2016 — no mandatory reflection period, the decision is yours.
- 4Drug IVG: You take the pill at the centre and then misoprostol at home (24–48 h later). Control at 14–21 days (ethography). Free.
- 5Surgical IVG: ambulatory (no night in most cases), under anesthesia. Resumed in a few days.
- 6Anonymity and free of charge: the abortion is free and anonymous for all women in France, including minors (with the agreement of a parent or via the doctor). Possible via ATU without CPAM.
- 7After IVG: possibility of contraception (talk to the doctor), psychological support (planning centre). Right to a work stoppage from 1 to 3 days.
- 8Conscientious clause: Doctors can refuse (unless vital emergency), but must guide you. Don't give up yourself — look for another center.
Common mistakes
Section actions
- Tarder — after 14 weeks, the procedure is more complex (medical reason required).
- To think that it is necessary for both parents to agree for a minor — only one is enough.
- Ignore free and anonymity for all.
- Try to order the pill online without follow-up — dangerous.
- Do not check after IVG — risk of incomplete interruption.
