Step-by-step procedure

  1. 1Check the expiration date of the CSS in the SPAM certificate (on ameli.fr). The CPAM sends a notice ~2 months before the deadline.
  2. 2Apply for renewal on ameli.fr (online) or in CPAM on 2 paper months before due date. Form Cerfa identical.
  3. 3From 2024, self-declaration: the CPAM can automatically renew on the basis of a self-declaration of resources (simplification) — check the notice.
  4. 4Attach last year's tax notice (income N-2). In case of composition/resource changes — specify it.
  5. 5CPAM investigates the case (~2 to 4 weeks). In case of favourable opinion — renewal for 1 year.
  6. 6In case of a change of income: if the income exceeds the ceiling — the CSS may become paid (with participation) or cease. Report changes over time.
  7. 7If you have missed the renewal: you can file a new application (like a first one), but in the meantime – default on coverage (payment or waiting).
  8. 8Keep your CSS certificate up to date — communicate the renewed certificate to the mutual/physician after renewal.

Common mistakes

  • Do not report a change in income — overpayment, then unfair (debt).
  • Believe the CSS automatically renewed forever. No — annual request.
  • Do not check the new certificate after renewal.
  • Paying the mutual during renewal — usually the paying third party continues.
