Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • You if you are looking for a BlaBlaCar long distance journey
  • You if you are a driver and want to share the daily travel costs
  • If you want to understand the legal differences carpooling/VTC

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Count on blablacar.fr or application
  • Phone with application
  • RIB (to receive payment as a driver)

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1For the passenger: find a trip on BlaBlaCar (or Karos, Klaxit, Mobicoop — alternatives). Choose the route, study the driver's profile (note, number of trips, bio). Book the place, pay by CB.
  2. 2On the day of the trip: present yourself instead of meeting. The application indicates the exact location. The driver usually gives a code for identification. Be on time — the driver is not waiting for >15 minutes.
  3. 3After the trip: rate the driver (5 stars + reviews). In case of dispute (error, bad behavior) — report to BlaBlaCar in 7 days for refund.
  4. 4For the driver: create an ad (date, route, price). Price — not more than the permitted scale (shareable costs). Too high price = commercial transport, VTC risk without licence (illegal).
  5. 5Carpool price scale: 的0,06–0,10 €/km/passenger. BlaBlaCar automatically caps. Exceedance — reported, possible refusal to publish.
  6. 6Payments: The passenger pays online (CB, PayPal), the driver receives the payment under 24–72 hours on his RIB after the trip. BlaBlaCar collects a commission 11 % to driver.
  7. 7Daily carpooling bonus: the government and the regions subsidize short trips ( 80 km). The passenger pays less (1 € or less), the rest is returned to the driver. Programs on carpooling-lejour.gouv.fr or regional platforms.
  8. 8Durable mobility package: the employer can reimburse up to 600 €/year for carpooling as a home-to-work journey (law LOM 2019). Find out about HR.
  9. 9Insurance: Personal car insurance (civil liability) covers passengers. But check — some insurances include a "paying carpooling" clause. BlaBlaCar has additional insurance during the journey.
  10. 10Legally: Carpooling does not require a VTC/taxi licence if (1) the driver does not make a profit (only cost sharing), (2) the journey is announced in advance. Each BlaBlaCar journey meets these criteria—so legal.
  11. 11For daily life (home-work journeys): applications Karos, Klaxit (based on journeys between colleagues/neighbours). Often with regional bonuses.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Believing that BlaBlaCar = taxi: it is a shared journey, time and place set by the driver.
  • Do not arrive on time — the driver can cancel the seat without a refund.
  • Asking for changes in route — the driver is not obliged to do so; to negotiate in advance.
  • Setting a price above the scale — illegal VTC risk, fine.
  • Do not check the insurance: personal insurance may not cover commercial transport, check.

Important remark

Carpooling is governed by the Transport Code and the LOM 2019 law. Indicative information; the conditions of the platforms may change.
