Drought in the Rhône: "crisis" level on the western half of the department

By order of 10 August 2026, the Prefect of the Rhône placed the watersheds of the western half of the department in a situation of "crisis" drought, and the communes along the Saône in "enhanced alert", a decision confirmed in the update of 22 September 2026. In crisis zones, water resources are primarily reserved for drinking water and sanitary and safety purposes: watering of green areas and filling of private swimming pools are prohibited. Offences are punishable up to €1,500 for an individual and €7,500 for a legal person.

From news to action

Who is concerned

All inhabitants of the western half of the Rhone and the municipalities along the Saône, including owners of houses, swimming pools and vegetable gardens, as well as enterprises using surface water and farmers. Farmers irrigating with Rhone River water or authorized water bodies are not subject to restrictions.

What to do

Check your municipality's restriction level on the site of the Rhône prefecture or the VigiEau interactive map. In a crisis zone, stop watering green and sports areas, do not fill your private pool and do not wash your vehicle at home. Vegetable gardening is only permitted outside the 9h–20h beach in a crisis zone; in case of doubt, contact your town hall. The watering of domestic and farmed animals is still permitted.

Background

Repeated heatwaves and a rain deficit since spring have caused the soil to dry up at record levels in the Rhône and the Lyon metropolis. Weather forecasts do not indicate any short-term improvement. This decision reinforces the measures already taken by the Decree of 21 July 2026, after consulting the Departmental Water Committee.

Why it's important

These restrictions affect people's daily actions — garden watering, car washing, pool filling — and can result in significant fines. It is essential to know the level applicable to its municipality, because the rules differ between the crisis zone and the Saône axis. The VigiEau platform allows to verify the common measures in force by municipality.

What Changes

The western half of the department goes to the level of "crisis": domestic sampling in streams, watering of green and sports spaces and filling of private pools are prohibited, regardless of the origin of the water. The Saône axis is in "enhanced alert", with fewer prohibitions but reductions of levies for all uses, domestic as well as economic.
