Background
A depression from off Portugal to the Gulf of Biscay has brought to the south-east a laden air of desert particles. The east of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region was particularly exposed, and the numerous showers scheduled for Friday, August 28, had to dry out the atmosphere and lower PM10 concentrations. The information-recommendation level (yellow surveillance) is the lowest alert level, without mandatory measures.
Why it's important
Pollution episodes primarily affect sensitive people: children, the elderly, asthmatics, and people with respiratory or cardiac diseases. Knowing the levels of vigilance makes it possible to adapt its activities without giving in to worry. The information concerned several areas of Savoie, including the Tarentaise and Maurienne valleys.
What Changes
Yellow vigilance was lifted on Saturday, August 29 2026; on Friday, August 28, the information-recommendation threshold was in effect for PM10 particles. No regulatory measures, such as traffic restrictions, have been activated.
Useful details
- On Friday 28 August 2026, the yellow vigilance covered three zones of Savoie: Zone 10 — valleys of Tarentaise and Maurienne; Zone 15 — alpine zone of Savoie; Zone 17 — urban zone of Savoie countries.
- The episode was bound to PM10 fine particles carried with desert particles; the August 28 showers were to reduce concentrations.
- No regulatory measures were activated: there was no need to change its activities or to stop its housing.
- Health recommendations for sensitive people: to move away from major roads at peak times, to limit intense physical activity, to protect children from car pollution, to seek advice in case of respiratory or cardiac discomfort.
- Behavioural recommendations: prefer walking, cycling, public transport and carpooling; adopt flexible driving and maintain your vehicle regularly.
