Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • Residents preparing to renew their residence permits
  • Persons with a first multi-year card or resident card
  • Candidates considering naturalization by decree

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Current title, proof of deposit and notifications ANEF or prefecture
  • Proofs of residence, employment, resources, taxes and insurance
  • Proof of the level of French specific to the procedure
  • Certification of civic examination when required for a first card or naturalization

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1For a renewal, use the time limit indicated on the official card of your title. The General Council "four to six months before" does not apply to all categories.
  2. 2Keep a continuous timeline: receipt or attestation, address, employment, taxes, CPAM and family changes. Respond to the administration's requests within the time limit.
  3. 3For a first multi-year card concerned, check A2 and civic exam; for a first resident card concerned, B1 and civic exam. Not all cards are affected and renewal generally does not require a new review.
  4. 4For naturalization by decree, prepare separate conditions: in general five years of residence, French B2, civic examination, interview, professional integration and tax of 255 €.
  5. 5The application for naturalization is usually filed online. The maximum period is 18 months after receipt, or 12 months after at least ten years of habitual residence; a reasoned extension of three months is possible once.
  6. 6France Services or a digital hosting point can help to use the teleservice, without legally validating the file or guaranteeing the decision.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Apply the same filing schedule to all securities
  • Consolidate levels A2, B1 and B2 between procedures
  • Believe that stable employment automatically guarantees renewal or naturalisation
  • Buying a allegedly guaranteed folder
  • Do not report a change of address, employment or family status

Important remark

Each title and mode of acquisition of nationality has its own conditions and filing windows. This guide gives a general logic; the personalized list of documents comes from the official procedure.
