Who this guide is for
Section actions
- If you want to help the community, meet people, practice French
- If you are looking for a job and want a first experience in France
- You if you ask for naturalization and want to prove your integration
To be prepared in advance
Section actions
- Passport or residence permit (volunteer is open to all, including foreigners)
- List of your interests (culture, sport, social, environment)
- Time available (a few hours/month or/week)
Step-by-step procedure
Section actions
- 1Find an association via francebenevolat.org, jeveuxaide.gouv.fr (public platform), or directly in town hall (CCAS, Maison des Associations). Choose by theme: social (Restos du Coeur, Secours Populaire), culture (media library, museum), sport (coach), environment.
- 2Contact the association: email, phone or online form. Explain your interest, availability, skills. Most welcome without formal selection.
- 3Sign a volunteer convention — not mandatory but recommended. It describes the mission, schedules, guarantees (civil liability insurance). The association automatically ensures volunteers.
- 4The weather is flexible: from 2–4 hours/month to several days/week. The law does not set minimum or maximum, but >120 hours/year is generally a significant commitment.
- 5If you are an employee — volunteering is done without working time or with the agreement of the employer. For volunteering in an association of general interest during working time — leave is possible (representative leave, 9 days/year).
- 6Expenses (transport, meals): reimbursed by the association — without tax if in the context of lump sum allowances. On the tax return — gift to an association (reduction of 66 % within the limit of 20 % of taxable income).
- 7Ask for a certificate of volunteerism — proof for naturalization (proof of integration), job center (search for activity), or the CAF. Keep the letters and certificates.
- 8For asylum seekers: Volunteering is possible with permission from OFPRA/Prefecture — usually in a migrant support association; for other associations — discuss with the association.
Common mistakes
Section actions
- To believe that volunteering is reserved for French citizens: open to all, including foreigners and asylum seekers (subject to conditions).
- Overcommitment — risk of exhaustion. Better start small and increase.
- Receiving money for volunteering — infringement; for remuneration, it takes an employee contract (CDI/CDD) or vacation.
- Do not sign an agreement — no cover in case of accident.
- Do not apply for a certificate for naturalisation — difficult to prove ex post facto volunteering.

Important remark
Volunteerism is governed by the 1901 Act and the Labour Code. Indicative information; for a specific association, contact the person in charge.
