Who this guide is for
Section actions
- You if you have just opened an account in France and need an RIB for your employer/CAF/leaser
- You if you request a bank certificate for a visa, naturalization or credit
- You if you don't understand the difference between RIB, IBAN and attestation
To be prepared in advance
Section actions
- Bank account (open and active)
- Access to the bank's app or agency
- Identification document — for certain stamped procedures
Step-by-step procedure
Section actions
- 1RIB: Download it in the bank's app (usually "RIB" → "Download" or "Print") or get it in an agency for free. Most banks provide unlimited copies. The RIB is valid as long as the account is open.
- 2IBAN (27 characters in France): FR + 2 control digits + 5 bank/window code + 11 digit account number + 2 key digits. BIC 8–11 characters (e.g. BNPAFRPP).
- 3For each use (salary, CAF, taxes, energy), send your RIB (one copy can serve multiple recipients). No personal information except name and contact details — it's safe.
- 4RIB certificate or account certificate: extended document with additional data (address, opening date, sometimes balance). Issued in an agency with signature/cachet; a PDF version sometimes exists in the app.
- 5Bank certificate for visa/naturalization: pro-forma document with your identity and account details. Often requested with bank stamp; banks charge 5–30 € (check your agreement).
- 6Transfer rationale: If you receive a large amount of money (purchase, estate), the CAF or the bank can request an original document — a statement with explanation. Keep the deed of sale or notarized certificate.
- 7In case of bank change: use bank mobility (free, article D312-5 CMF) — the new bank automatically transmits your new RIB to the employer, to the energy suppliers, to the CAF, to the taxes.
- 8Closing of account: the bank must issue a closing certificate with the date; keep it for taxes/ CAF during 6 – 12 months.
Common mistakes
Section actions
- Send a screenshot instead of a real RIB — often refused, you need a PDF or stamped paper.
- Believe that the RIB contains confidential data — no balance on it; it is safe.
- Request an RIB certificate online without a stamp — for some administrative procedures, the paper version is required.
- Do not activate bank mobility when changing banks — waste of time updating the coordinates manually.
- Transmit an obsolete RIB after a bank change — the transfer doesn't happen, the return takes 1–4 weeks.
