Who this guide is for
Section actions
- You if any money has been debited without your consent
- You if you entered your card data on a fake site (phishing)
- You if the bank refuses the refund and you want to know your rights
To be prepared in advance
Section actions
- Card number (16 digits) and expiry date — for opposition
- Record or catch of fraudulent transactions (date, amount, merchant)
- IBAN/RIB of your account — for correspondence with the bank
Step-by-step procedure
Section actions
- 1Call immediately the opposition server 0 892 705 705 (France Cartes) — 24/7, €0,347/min. Give the card number: it will be blocked and you will receive a registration number (keep it). Report also via your bank's app or hotline.
- 2Do the challenge in writing with your bank — usually in the app, or recommended with AR. Indicate the card, date and amount of the disputed transaction, the registration number. By law, the bank must repay within 10 working days (or grant a provisional credit).
- 3Meet the deadline. For an unauthorized card transaction (withdrawal/payment): 13 months to challenge. For a SEPA (SDD) levy: 8 weeks if already executed, 13 months if not authorized. Beyond that, the right to reimbursement is extinguished.
- 4File a complaint — to the police station or gendarmerie, by mail, or online on plf.internet-signally.gouv.fr (PEROOSE for online fraud). The copy of the complaint is often requested by the bank for reimbursement.
- 5In case of phishing, change your passwords, check mobile subscriptions, report on signal-spam.fr and cybermalveillance.gouv.fr (free diagnostic and step-by-step help).
- 6If the bank rejects or drags: send a complaint to the bank's complaints department, wait for the answer (2 months in general), then enter the consumer mediator free of charge (bank mediator, mediator.economie.gouv.fr). The court only intervenes afterwards.
Common mistakes
Section actions
- Waiting to think that "it's going to be solved" — let the 13-month delay pass and lose the right to reimbursement.
- Calling only the bank and not the 0 892 705 705 — without opposition, the card remains active and fraudsters continue.
- Do not keep the registration number or challenge in writing — difficult to prove date.
- Communicate SMS codes (SCA) to fraudsters — the bank considers the transaction to be authorized and may refuse repayment.
- Confounding serious negligence (transmit code/CVV to a third party) — the bank may refuse or limit the refund to €150 (art. L133-19 CMF).
