Who this guide is for

Section actions
  • Families with children from 3 to 6 years of age preparing kindergarten
  • New arrivals with a young child, first enrollment in French school
  • Parents wishing to activate canteen and extracurricular at the same time as enrolment

To be prepared in advance

Section actions
  • Family booklet or birth certificate
  • Proof of domicile — e.g. electricity bill or lease
  • Health diary with current vaccines
  • Certificate of cancellation if your child changes school

Step-by-step procedure

Section actions
  1. 1Start at the town hall of your municipality, at the service of the schools. Do it in the spring if possible: in many cities, registration closes in June before the start of the school year.
  2. 2The town hall gives you a certificate of registration and tells you the area school according to your address.
  3. 3With this document, go to school to finalize enrolment with the principal. That's the last step.
  4. 4Ask for the canteen and the extracurricular immediately. You will know what to do and what budget to plan for.
  5. 5If you come to move in, don't forget the graduation certificate from the old school.
  6. 6If your child doesn't speak French yet, say it from the beginning. The school will explain how the reception is going.

Common mistakes

Section actions
  • Wait for the summer to start. In some municipalities, registrations have already been closed.
  • Arrive without proof of residence. You might have to come back a second time.
  • Forget the cancellation certificate after a move.
