Step-by-step procedure

  1. 1Determine the place of deposit: in a town hall equipped for biometrics (most of the major town halls AURA), or at the French consulate abroad. Make an online appointment (rdv-passeport.ants.gouv.fr).
  2. 2Collect the documents: old passport, identity card, birth certificate < 3 months, proof of residence (or proof of accommodation), photo (if applicable).
  3. 3Pay the tax stamp online: ~86 € adult, 42 € for 15–18 years, free until 15 years. The amounts change periodically.
  4. 4Present yourself to the appointment: the agent checks the parts, takes prints and photo. The coins remain with you, the old passport is cancelled at the delivery of the new one.
  5. 5Wait for manufacturing (standard ~3 weeks, plus peak). Withdrawal in person, with proof.
  6. 6Emergency procedure: for proven necessity (death, illness, professional contract) — within 1 to 3 days. Evidence required.
  7. 7Loss/theft: File a statement in the police or gendarmerie (possible online), then apply for a new passport.

Common mistakes
